How to Measure Curtains

Step 1: Place Your Rod

We recommend mounting curtain rod 6–8" above the window frame. With tall ceilings, you can go even higher—about halfway between the window and the ceiling molding—for a more dramatic look. With low ceilings, mount the rod as high as possible, about 1–2" below the ceiling molding.

Step 2: Measure Your Total Length

Measure from your chosen rod height to the floor. Subtract 1" to account for the rod and ring hang—this is your curtain length.

If you already have rods hung: Skip step 1 and measure from the bottom of the rod to the floor, subtract 1" for ring drop, and use that as your curtain length.

Step 3: Pick Your Width

We offer two curtain widths: single and double. A pair of single-width panels fits most standard single windows, while a pair of double-width panels works well for wider double windows or French doors.

Pro tip: Ensure your rod width allows for "stack back" by adding 4–8" on each side of your window. For double-width windows, add 8–12" per side. This lets your curtains fully open, maximizing light and window visibility.

Keep in mind, pleated and flat top curtains have different dimensions. Pleated panels are narrower at the top and wider at the bottom (e.g., a single pleated panel is 25" across the top and 50" across the bottom), while flat tops remain the same width throughout. This makes flat tops more flexible for various window sizes. For help choosing the right width, see the chart below:

For extra-wide windows or French doors, you can combine flat top panels. For example, hang one double-width and one single-width panel side by side for a wider look.

Step 4: Install

For the most accurate fit, wait to install your rods until your curtains arrive. Hang the curtains on the rings, hold the rod up with a helper, and mark the spot where the panels just skim the floor. Then mount your hardware.
